Congratulations to The Hidden Genius Project on their beautiful new space in Inglewood, CA, where they continue their mission to empower Black male youth through technology creation, entrepreneurship and leadership skills. Since 2012, HGP has been connecting young men with the skills, mentors and experiences needed to become high-performing entrepreneurs and technologists in a 21st-century global economy. We recently had the honor of touring the new Inglewood site and observing HGP's award-winning 15-month Intensive Immersion Program for high school students. How can the art of dance inspire a love for coding and diversify the future of STEM? According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), 29% of people employed in STEM fields are women, while women of color make up less than 5%. STEM From Dance is using the power of dance to inspire girls of color to explore STEM and help change the landscape of STEM education. One of STEM From Dance’s initiatives is Girls Rise Up, a free summer camp held in multiple cities across the U.S. This three-week immersive program brings together girls ages 8 to 18 to not only dance, but also level up their confidence, unlock new STEM abilities and connect with a supportive tribe of like-minded creatives and aspiring technologists. In Los Angeles, girls attended camp at California State University-Dominguez Hills or A Place Called Home and spent each day dancing, coding and exploring how to merge dance and technology to choreograph an innovative performance. The program culminated in a dance showcase for friends and family where the girls demonstrated how coded LED lights and afro-Cuban, hip-hop, contemporary and jazz dance styles come together in a night of musical storytelling. Congratulations to all the Girls Rise Up participants and thank you STEM From Dance for inspiring girls to dream big in STEM. #STEMeducation #girlsinSTEM

Earlier this month, 170 local high school students completed Thrive Scholars inaugural BMO Thrive Academy - Los Angeles program at the University of Southern California. This intensive six-week college prep program, which includes over 350 hours of calculus and writing courses, provides high-achieving students of color from economically disadvantaged communities with the opportunities they need to thrive at top colleges and in meaningful careers. This year’s L.A. cohort of 170 students boasts an impressive 3.9 average GPA with 83% identifying as first-generation college-goers. Students we met shared how much they valued Thrive’s approach to integrating joy and curiosity into rigorous learning, the community and bonds they were building with their peers, and their professors’ continued emphasis that “seeking help is a smart choice.” Once these students enter college, they will participate in Thrive Scholars’ career pathways program, which includes one-on-one career coaching and transformative internship and job opportunities. Want to meet the next generation of mathematicians? Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) and their BEAM Discovery program helps underserved Los Angeles students enter advanced study in mathematics. Since 2011, BEAM has provided these free programs to more than 1,500 local students. We recently visited the 100 sixth graders spending five weeks of their summer learning advanced math, making friends with others who love math, and building the skills, confidence and self-identity for success. During our visit, BEAM staff also shared an exciting program milestone! BEAM’s first cohort of 40 students will matriculate to college this fall — including two to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — and most plan to major in a STEM field. Congratulations to these incredible students!
